Water Wags Sailing

Event Description

Sunday 2nd July – Water Wags (classic sailing dinghies based in Dun Laoghaire) sail in company from Dun Laoghaire Harbour to Dalkey Island. Start at 11:00 between the East Pier Bandstand and the Carlisle Pier.

The Water Wag dinghies have been racing in Dun Laoghaire since 1887 which makes them the oldest one design yacht class in the World. On 21 June 1887, a bank holiday (for Queen Victoria’s Jubilee), the Water Wags took the opportunity to sail in their thirteen foot long wooden dinghies from Dun Laoghaire (Kingstown) to Dalkey Island. Eight Water Wag dinghies took part, and when they arrived at Dalkey, the boats were anchored and their crews went ashore on the Island for lunch.

In most years since 1887, the Water Wags have continued the tradition of sailing to Dalkey Island for a picnic and plan to do so again on Sunday 2nd July 2023 as part of Coastival, leaving Dun Laoghaire at 1100.

This event is free of charge.
