Lead Mines: A Talk by Rob Goodbody
The leadmines chimney is a prominent landmark between Shankill and Kilternan, though this is just part of the remnants of mining operations visible at Ballycorus. This talk provides the story of lead mining on the hillside and the manufacturing of lead products, including the intriguing background to the construction of the chimney. Lead was also brought from Glendalough to Ballycorus and this is seen at the spoil heaps and ruined buildings above the upper lake and in the Glendasan valley. The talk ties in the story of mining at both locations. Rob Goodbody is a building historian and President of the Rathmichael Historical Society. He has published a number of books, including several relating to the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown area, the latest of which is The Lead Mines - Ballycorus and Glendalough.
