The Domestic in Poetry and Prose: A Creative Writing workshop with Shauna Gilligan & Sara Mullen
Honouring the theme of the domestic in much of Eavan Boland’s poetry, this workshop will take a theme from Sara’s poetry and Shauna’s prose in the Tearing Stripes off Zebras anthology. Using lines or elements of this work as prompts, as well as real life objects including baking utensils and found objects as inspiration, Sara and Shauna will guide participants through writing exercises in an exploration of memories of home and the objects which evoke them, looking at meaning and the extraordinary in the everyday domestic. Participants can work on poetry or prose, or explore both.
Workshop Outcomes: Participants can expect to:
- learn more about symbols and using the everyday as prompts and ways into writing.
- discuss symbols with each other and the group
- engage in free form writing using guided prompts
- receive feedback on work (if wished)
- write short texts in the genres of poetry and prose
- create ideas for further development
