This talk introduces the fascinating figure of Casimir Markievicz, husband of Constance Markievicz, and his central place in Dublin’s bohemian circles in pre-revolutionary Dublin. A painter, playwright, and larger-than-life personality, Casimir was a close associate of many luminaries of the Irish Revival. This presentation will discuss Casimir’s relationship to Constance, his artistic ambitions, and the links between Ireland, Poland, and Ukraine that his life represents.

Kathryn Milligan is Assistant Librarian at the Edward Murphy Library, National College of Art and Design, Dublin. An art historian specialising in nineteenth and twentieth century Irish art, her work focuses on the depiction of Dublin and the city as a site of exhibition, display and artistic exchange.

This talk is presented in conjunction with the related exhibition on Casimir Markievicz, a Polish Artist in Bohemian Dublin, 1903-13 on display on Level 4, dlr LexIcon from Tues 7 July – Mon 31 August.
