The Metals Green
Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council is proposing to develop The Metals Green, a 0.30‑hectare public open space located along Harbour Road, bounded by the Irish Lights building to the west and the Royal Irish Yacht Club to the east.
The proposed development includes a new shoreside balustrade, an accessible circulation route through the site, and a central gathering space capable of accommodating a mobile kiosk. Additional features under consideration include a yoga lawn, tiered lawn areas, playful elements, and the introduction of appropriate coastal tree and ground‑cover planting. This placemaking project aims to create an attractive destination, provide a key stop‑off point along the coastal mobility route, and support the ongoing regeneration of Dún Laoghaire Harbour.
Cycling access will be encouraged through the provision of bicycle and cargo‑bike parking at the park’s main entrances. Terraced seating along one side of the site will respond to existing changes in ground levels while offering generous opportunities for rest and informal social interaction. Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS) will be integrated to manage surface water on site in an environmentally sensitive manner.
The project is currently well advanced at detailed design stage, with construction works planned to commence in Q3 2026, subject to the appointment of a preferred main contractor.
