An Cathaoirleach Cllr Lettie McCarthy launches the Dublin Community Clean-up with Richard Curtain (Clean Coasts), Mary O’Keeffe, Brian Flynn and junior members from Dún Laoghaire Tidy Towns Group.

Residents, volunteers and communities are invited to join Dublin’s anti-litter movement and make a positive impact this September during Dublin Climate Action Week.

The 2021 Dublin Community Clean-up builds on the success of the 2019 event, when over 180 clean-ups took place across the county. This year’s event will take place from the 11th to the 19th of September as part of the inaugural Dublin Climate Action week. Dublin’s largest clean-up event is a county-wide collaboration initiative from Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, Clean Coasts An Taisce, local volunteers, residents, community groups, Fingal County Council, South Dublin County Council, Dublin City Council, National Spring Clean, Local Authority Waters Programme, Dublin City Canals and Dodder Action. This event encourages volunteers, agencies and communities to work together to make a concerted effort to address litter and environmental degradation. Through collaboration, we can tackle the issue of litter in local areas and continue to #KeepDublinBeautiful.

Speaking at the launch, An Cathaoirleach Cllr Lettie McCarthy of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council said;

“I would encourage all of our great community volunteers to take part in this unique anti-litter movement during Dublin’s Climate Action Week. Clean-ups positively benefit our local environment, our county and ultimately our shared planet. By coming together during September, through such clean-up events, we can make a stand against litter and show that it is not tolerated within our communities. “

All residents are invited to take part. By participating in organised clean-ups, groups and individuals come together to make a positive difference not only in their own community but also globally. Free litter-pick equipment (gloves, bags and pickers) is available from Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council under their Community Clean-up Scheme. The Council can also collect the litter bags after the event.

Dún Laoghaire Tidy Towns is a voluntary community group working endlessly for a cleaner, tidier, greener, nicer and lively town in which to live, work, shop, stroll and visit. This group established only eighteen months ago, has grown to well over one hundred volunteers and has made a real and tangible difference to the town of Dún Laoghaire. Speaking at the launch of the Dublin Community Clean-up, Mary O’Keeffe mentioned that;

“Dún Laoghaire Tidy Towns Group is committed to improving our local area and have recruited a team of selfless volunteers who organise regular litter picks and green projects throughout the town to protect our parks, streets and open spaces. I see the negative impacts litter can have on the environmental quality and amenity of our unique coastal area. Dún Laoghaire residents have pride in their area, value their heritage and their environment. Our mission is to Clean, Green, Nurture and Preserve. We are delighted to be part of the launch of this anti-litter collective call to action that takes a stand against people who litter.”

Richard Curtin Clean Coasts Officer for the Dublin region commented;

"We were delighted to be part of the Dublin Community Clean-up event again for 2021.  Over the last year and a half so many of us have benefited from spending time exploring the beauty of our locality.  The Dublin Community Clean-up gives us an opportunity to give back and help protect our environment into the future".
