Intro Text

COVID 19 has changed many things for us all, but daily life in the community goes on in all areas, with groups, associations and projects of all types doing their best to thrive even while complying with necessary public health restrictions. Do you have an idea for a project or an initiative, big or small, that could benefit your local area in community development, sports, environment or business promotion? Your initiative could make a difference to the well-being and quality of life, even in a small way, of the people in your local neighbourhood!

Each year Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council opens a grant funding scheme for the following year, known as the dlr Grants Scheme. It provides funding to individuals, groups and organisations engaged in projects, events or initiatives at a neighbourhood or County level within our area, with a particular emphasis on supporting locally driven and grass roots initiatives. The scheme aims to assist those projects that promote growth and development in community-based initiatives, local business promotion, in sports of all types, our local heritage, environmental protection, cultural festivals, events and other areas.

The impact of COVID 19 this year is unparalleled and planned events and initiatives at all levels and in all areas of our community, like society as whole, have all been very significantly affected. The ongoing pandemic will likely have an impact on initiatives, events and festivals into 2021 but we are also aware of the resilience and flexibility of all our community groups and the many innovative ways that they have kept their programmes and events running as much as practicable. In times such as these, it is all the more important that the Council continue to support our communities.

The scheme has the potential to significantly assist the development of projects and initiatives to help them achieve their full potential or allow them to adjust to best work within restrictions. The elected Councillors agree on a budget each year out of which the dlr Grants Scheme is managed by Council staff. Applications are all administered via a dedicated portal on the Council website,  In order to ensure good governance and transparency there are a number of general guidelines that refer to applying for the grants and some additional guidelines around specific grant categories. This helps ensure that the Council is supporting the very best in the development of our communities.

Speaking of the opening of the dlr Grants Scheme for 2021, An Cathaoirleach for Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, Cllr. Una Power said ‘The dlr Grants Scheme offers a great opportunity to help community groups and local people implement a wide variety of initiatives in a number of different areas. During my time as a Councillor I have seen the benefits these grants have had and I believe they can offer important supports for local groups during these difficult times. I would advise any individual or group in the dlr area, who are looking for assistance or supports, to consider applying for the grants available.’

This is your chance to apply for funding that could kick-start a new local initiative that makes a real difference or take an existing local initiative and lift it to the next level.
