Intro Text

The Electoral (Amendment) Act 2015 was enacted on 29 December 2015.

Section 3 of the Act deals with a new category of application for inclusion in the supplement to the register of electors.

A person may apply for entry in the supplement to the register of electors if they were not a citizen of Ireland on the qualifying date for that register but subsequently became a citizen of Ireland.

This effectively means that a person who becomes a citizen of Ireland after 1 September will no longer have to await the next cycle of voter registration to be registered to vote on the basis of their Irish citizenship.

They will no longer have the distinguishing letters D, E or L entered in the register of electors opposite their names.

They will be entitled to vote at any election or referendum taking place before the next following register of electors comes into force.

Form RFA5 - Application for Inclusion in the Supplement to the Register of Electors by a person already registered who becomes an Irish Citizen is available on our Register of Electors page
