Intro Text

Comhairle na nÓg are child and youth councils in the 31 local authorities of the country, which give children and young people the opportunity to be involved in the development of local services and policies.

The current Comhairle was formed at the 2016 AGM, the 2nd AGM was held in November 2017 in County Hall. A total of 94 young people registered to attend with 90 young people present on the day. 21 Secondary Schools within the County were represented on the day plus young people from Sports Reach Sallynoggin and Southside Travellers.
Currently there are 25 active members representing 10 schools.
The 2018 Work Plan centres on two core mechanisms to enable Comhairle na nÓg members to have a voice on the services, policies and issues that affect young people in the local area:

1) Working on topics of importance to young people
2) Acting as a consultative forum for adult decision makers in the locality

The theme for the 2017 AGM was Youth Mental Health. Three topics  were discussed - Bullying, Positive Mental Health, Mental Health in Schools.

Young people voted on Mental Health in Schools as the project Comhairle will work on in 2018. This work has been completed and culminated in the release of a booklet of tips for positive mental health for young people, which can be viewed here.
