This year the Five Loaves in Bray is just one of the lucky recipients being presented with a cheque for €3,419 from HUG member Roisin Flynn for the purchase of shower facilities and tables for its premises at Albert Walk, Bray.

Betty Wogan, secretary of the HUG committee, said “From the smallest of gifts a huge change can be made to the lives of others, especially when many of us participate in the giving. This continues to be a fantastic project in which to be involved.  We are all very proud of the fact that 100% of all the money raised by the HUG members is given out in donations”.

In these difficult times, the HUG fund recognises that charities are responding to an increased demand for their services while struggling with reduced funding.

Staff of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council established, through Workplace Partnership, a staff charity initiative named “HUG” (Hope U Give).  The concept is simple, current and retired Council staff members make voluntary contributions into the HUG fund.  This is then redistributed by way of donations to charitable causes as nominated by its members.  Over the last five years, more than €100,000.00 has been given out in funding to a number of local, national and international charities.

This is not the first time HUG crossed the Dún Laoghaire- Rathdown/ Wicklow border to assist worthy causes - back in 2012 a donation of €4,000 was made to the then Bray Cancer Cancer Rescource Centre (now the Purple House) which was used to part-fund the purchase of a car to facilitate service users in getting to hospital appointments, etc.

It is clear that the smallest of gifts can make a huge change to the lives of others.

The members of HUG are delighted to play a positive part in supporting the excellent work carried out by charitable organisations such as the Five Loaves in providing assistance to people seeking basic provision, be it a hot meal, a hot shower or a place to meet.

The dlr HUG motto is simple and yet clearly reflects what they do:

“We make a living by what we get, however we make a life by what we give.”
