Intro Text

At a special meeting of Dun Laoghaire-Rathown County Council last night (12 February) Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government - Eoghan Murphy TD., briefed local councillors about the five pillars of Rebuilding Ireland, illustrating the challenges that lie ahead for all Local Authorities.

Minister Eoghan Murphy T.D.,commented: As elected representatives, we have to give our urgent attention to the housing crisis.  Our new focus is on local authorities building more homes.  In 2017 alone, we added 2,000 new homes to our social housing stock across the Country, but we must continue to do more together in the implementation of Rebuilding Ireland. Our aim is to deliver 50,000 homes. This is the first time in the history of the State that we have specifically ring-fenced six billion for a dedicated housing delivery programme".

dlr's housing delivery targets over the next four years will be 1,687 social housing homes, which excludes HAP and RAS. This figure does not include re-let figures which is an average of 150 allocations per year.

Philomena Poole, Chief Executive, dlr commented as follows: "Our housing delivery programme over the next four years is ambitious, but we are confident that we can rise to the challenge. We will continue to work hard and ensure that we deliver housing for those who require it in our area. We aim to provide 1,687 social housing homes through construction, Part V and acquisitions between now and 2021. We are currently active on eight social housing sites across the County ranging from two to fifty homes.  We will be moving into larger sites  that will help to address some of the affordability issues that we face in dlr. Social housing is our main priority and we are priortising two larger sites, namely St Laurence's Park and Shanganagh Castle. In addition to this, we anticipate that up to 700 units can be secured for social housing in Cherrywood, but this will depend on the availability of funding and full planning permission and development of residential zoned lands in this SDZ. The first delivery of social housing in this area is expected to be 2019-2020".
