RTÉ's Operation Transformation teamed up once again with Sport Ireland and the Local Sports Partnerships by organising a number of special National Walks which took place in Counties all around Ireland. We also had Killian Byrne, an Operation Transformation leader from the 2012 series, helping to motivate and encourage the participants.
People of all ages and fitness levels put on their runners and turned up to take part in the 4.5km walk around The People’s Park, Newtownsmith and the East Pier. The atmosphere was full of energy and extremely positive from the fun warm up to the finish line with unusually mild weather. Most importantly the rain held off and the refreshments at the end of the walk were well earned.
In attendance and starting off the event, An Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Cormac Devlin expressed his delight at the turnout and said
I was thrilled to see so many people come out and participate in the walk. This County has so many beautiful and scenic locations to go for a walk and I would encourage everyone to get out and explore while getting some really important physical activity.”
Speaking after the event Shane McArdle, Co-ordinator of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Sports Partnership said “the importance of a healthy lifestyle is well documented and studies consistently show that getting more exercise improves both physical and mental health. A big thank you has to go out to all the volunteers who helped on the day, the County Council’s Parks Department and Sport Ireland. “
