Dalkey Islands (including Dalkey Island, Lamb Island and Maiden Rock) are designated as a Special Protection Area (
We ask you to help to protect and to maintain the natural character of the Islands so that everyone can enjoy them. Here is how:
Respect for the Environment
We ask that you assist us to preserve the unique and historic buildings on the island by respecting their historic importance to present and future generations.
Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Co. Co. By-Laws should be adhered to at all times.
In order to avoid disturbance to nesting birds/other wildlife, dogs are not permitted on the Islands
In order to protect nesting birds/other wildlife the feeding, close approach and disturbance of any wildlife on the Island is not permitted. As a general rule, please maintain a distance of 50 - 100m.
Please do not chase the goats, this is very stressful for these animals and causes suffering.
Please obey the signs which indicate the areas closed to access to protect our important species.
Please do not take biological or geological souvenirs from the Islands.
Please do not camp on the island.
Lighting fires of any description is not permitted on the Islands.
When landing on the slipway, we ask that all visitors ensure that they don’t block access to or exit from the islands and should consider other users at all times. Please obey the signs which indicate the No Landing areas and the boat Speed Limit of 4 Knots around the island.
DLRCC supports the ‘Leave No Trace’ environmental policy. Please take all rubbish home with you.
We encourage you to get involved with the organized conservation work for the island.
The terrain of the islands is very undulating and the grassland contains rock outcrops and rabbit holes. Visitors are expected to take extra precaution when walking on the island and wear appropriate footwear to ensure their safety.
Extra precaution should be taken when embarking and disembarking from the island slipway. Slip and trip hazards exist along the entire length of the structure from the slipway to the stepped pathway.
The steep cliff faces should be avoided at all times.
Visitors are not permitted on the Islands after 4pm in winter (October –March) and 9pm in summer (April – September).
Visitors are not permitted to land on Lamb Islands and Maiden Rock between May and October when terns are nesting and roosting. Please do not cross the rocks between Dalkey Island an Lamb Island during this period.
