Call for Writer in Residence at
The Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT)
Introduction
Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, through its extensive
Arts Programme, is committed to producing and supporting artistically
ambitious and exciting Arts Programmes across all art forms
that stimulate, engage and connect with the public or local
community. It recognizes the centrality of the artists in
our society and seeks to support the artist's interaction
with the public through its wide-ranging service.
The Artist in Residency Programme 2008 includes Writer in
Residence, at the Institute of Arts Design and Technology;
Fine Artist, Julie Merriman in a residency with the Harbour
Board, Jennie Moran, sculptor at Airfield Trust, Dundrum and
Métier, DLR Jazz Ensemble in Residence. DLR Arts also
has two writers' bursaries which run in alternate years, the
Beckett Busary (to be appointed) and the Hugh Leonard Bursary
(awarded to Claire Keegan in 2007).
These residencies are co-funded by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown
County Council and the Arts Council. In addition the Institute
of Art, Design and Technology, Airfield Trust and the Harbour
Board co-fund the residencies in which they are partners.
The IADT Residency
The Writer in Residence initiative in collaboration with IADT
has been in place since 2002.
Previous collaborations between IADT, the Arts Council and
Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council Arts Office include
writers in residence, poet Caitriona O'Reilly, poet Peter
Sirr and poet Katie Donovan.
The Residency has built up an interesting of portfolio of
activities. These includes creating a bridge to the community
through writing workshops, workshops in collaboration with
National Rehabilitation hospital and with St. Vincent's hospital,
extra-mural weekly workshops with students and community members
at IADT, organisation of public readings, organisation of
public presentation of workshop work, including at the DLR
Poetry Now Festival and at Ireland-Newfoundland March Hare.
The Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art Design and Technology
(IADT) has a unique geographic location, with an excellent
infrastructure - access to public transport and buildings,
close to the M50 and M1 routes to the Airport as well as the
port at Dun Laoghaire. IADT was established in 1997, as Dun
Laoghaire Institute of Art Design and Technology. IADT is
a public institution and a member of the Irish Institute of
Technology sector.
The Writer in Residence and the School of Business and Humanities,
IADT.
The School of Business and Humanities, (a key sponsor of the
Writer in Residence programme), has much to offer the new
knowledge economy in Ireland and in the EU. Its strengths
are: a dedicated, well-qualified staff, committed to learning
and teaching, with a proven research track record, offering
a unique suite of programmes in an environment which is student
centred. The School has a proven track record in successful
postgraduate research degree supervision and project management.
It has built up strong eternal links nationally and internationally.
It has attracted international students to IADT. The ethos
of the school promotes staff development and facilitates staff
opportunities for research dissemination, peer-reviewed assessment
and interaction with research staff in other institutions
nationally and internationally. The Department of Humanities,
through it BA in English Media and Cultural Studies is committed
to promoting the practice of writing, and to developing new
audiences for Irish and international writing.
The Centre for Public Culture Studies:
The Head of Department of Humanities and Co-ordinator of The
Centre for Pubic Culture Studies, Dr. Paula Gilligan, School
of Business and Humanities, IADT, works in close collaboration
with the Writer in Residence, and supports the Writer in Residence
in his or her achievement of the objectives of the program.
The School of Business and Humanities offers a framework for
public interaction to the writer in residence through its
research centre, The Centre for Public Culture Studies.
Located in the School of Business and Humanities, the Centre
was launched by Dr. Willy Buschak, Deputy Director of the
European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working
Conditions, in November, 2007. It aims to promote high-quality
research, teaching and public dissemination of historical
and contemporary aspects of Public Culture, within national,
European and international contexts. The Centre promotes multidisciplinary
and interdisciplinary approaches to the study of Public Culture,
and welcomes the participation and partnership of all interested
individuals and organisations. The Centre has established
links with a number of national and international organizations.
Our MA in Public Culture Studies Seminar Program includes
special events, guest lecturers and conference attendance,
and will be a resource for the Writer in Residence programme
in terms of promoting the programme and events such as readings.
Students of the MA are invited to participate in the Writer
in Residence workshops.
Residency objectives
To create opportunities for the individual artist to:
- develop his/her own work
- to develop publics for her/his work among the Dun Laoghaire
Rathdown County community.
- engage with the student, academic and broader community
as appropriate to the context, the Dun Laoghaire Rathdown
County community.
- foster an environment where artmaking and an appreciation
of art making can flourish;
- To conduct writing workshops with members of the community
where appropriate, including a weekly extra-mural workshop
located in IADT.
Writer's brief
Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, IADT with the support
of the Arts Council invite submissions from writers in fiction
for a residency based in IADT (September 2008- May 2009).
Writers are invited to take inspiration from varied sources
including the educational context, the innovative research
work and the artistic resources.
The IADT will provide a desk and access to a computer within
the college but will not provide an office.
The selected writer will be required to live in (or within
reasonable commuting distance) to Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown
County, and to IADT.
Selection process
Selection will be made by way of a two-stage open submission
competition.
Stage I: Writers will submit an expression of interest
together with details of previous work to date as follows:
- A typed curriculum vitae (maximum 3 pages)
- Examples of previous work.
- Publications, programmes or published articles, such as
reviews
- Typed expression of interest in the residency and motivation
for the residency brief (no more than two typed pages).
Please ensure that all submitted materials are clearly marked
with the writer's name.
Criteria for selection
- Expression of interest and capacity to address brief
- Artistic merit and originality of work
- Quality of previous work
Closing date: Fri 20th June 2008
Stage II: A short-list of applicants will be drawn
up and will be invited to take a guided site visit at IADT
during the week of the 30th June. Following the visit, writers
will be required to submit a detailed proposal for the second
stage by 2008 by the 7th July and will be invited to an interview
to present a detailed plan of work to a panel for the residency
in terms of the community context on the 9th July 2008.
The proposal might include the following:
- Detailed plan of work in the context of IADT and of Dun
Laoghaire Rathdown County, the location of the residency;
- A clear description of the benefits of the residency to
his/her stage of development as an writers;
- A clear description of the benefits of the residency to
his/her current artistic preoccupations including ideas for
usage of the resources and facilities;
- Ideas in relation to public engagement with due regard to
the community and cultural remit of the Centre for Public
Culture Studies amd the School of Business and Humanities,
IADT.
Criteria for selection
- Quality of proposal;
- Suitability of the proposal to the context of the residency
as described by the stakeholders;
- Perceived ability to fulfil the requirements of the residency.
In advance of the residency the following will be agreed:
- Clear goals, roles and responsibilities and agreed criteria
for partnership so as to harness the distinct resources of
all partners;
- Agreed programme of work that is flexible and responsive;
- Mediation and facilitation of the writers on site including
orientation, meetings, computer facilities etc. and a dedicated
space to work;
- A timetable that balances time for the writers' own work
and time for interaction with various publics;
- Ongoing review and evaluation; regular meetings;
- Dedicated administrative support from Dun Laoghaire Rathdown
County Council Arts Office and on site support from the Arts
Officer, IADT.
Summary of key dates
Friday 23rd May 2008: Call for submissions;
Friday 20th June 2008: Closing date Stage I submissions;
Weds 25th June 2008: Selection by panel of shortlisted writers;
Wk of 30th June 2008: Shotlisted writers tour IADT;
Monday 7th July 2008 Closing date Stage II proposal
9th July 2008: Interviews/presentation of proposals by shortlisted
writers.
Residency begins September 2008 and lasts until the end of
May 2009.
Budget information
The total budget for the residency is €22,000. This amount
is to be fully inclusive of the writers's fee - €20,000
and materials and other related costs €2,000.
The successful writers will be required to provide Dún
Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council with a tax clearance certificate,
evidence of artists' exemption and evidence of public liability
insurance to a specified amount prior to signing of contracts.
Support from Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council's Arts Officer
and IADT's Head of School of Business of Humanities will act
as the liaison support between the artist, the local authority
and IADT during the selection process. Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown
County Council's Arts Officer and IADT's Head of Humanities
will act as liaison support between the artist, the local
authority and IADT, throughout the residency. Dun Laoghaire
Rathdown County Council Arts Office will be responsible for
administering contracts and payments to artists.
Freedom of Information
The provisions of the Freedom of Information Act 1997-2003
apply to Dun Laoghaire- Rathdown County Council. Applicants
should state if any of the information supplied by them is
confidential or sensitive and should not be disclosed to a
request for information under the aforementioned Act.
Applicants should state why they consider the information
to be confidential or commercially sensitive.
Prompt Payments
Under the Prompt Payments Accounts Act, the Local Authority
is obliged to Pay within 30 days.
