2006 - Artists Bursary Awarded to
Bryan Delaney

Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council in partnership with The Arts Council is delighted to announce Bryan Delaney, playwright as the 2006 recipient of the County's Beckett Bursary. Bryan will spend his residency in Centre Culturel Irlandais, Paris and will use his time to redraft his third play"The Onion Game".

Bryan is an exciting and original playwright, who grew up in Dún Laoghaire. Bryan Delaney's first play, The Cobbler, was joint winner of The 16th International Playwriting Competition, organised by The Warehouse Theatre in London. The Cobbler was produced by The Irish Classical Theatre Company in Buffalo, New York, in March 2005. The production won two Katherine Cornell awards and an Artvoice ARTIE award. In 2005, Bryan won a unique ‘05 Commission' to write a new play, Canty's Wig , for The Everyman Palace Theatre in Cork on the occasion of Cork being European Capital of Culture in 2005. His play, The Onion Game, was commissioned by Rough Magic Theatre Company in Dublin as part of their SEEDS 2 programme and had a staged reading at the 2005 Dublin Fringe Festival. The Onion Game is currently in development with Rough Magic. His new one-act play, Stretching Larry , will be published in 2007 as part of ‘Europe On Stage: An Anthology of 25 One-Act Plays' and a short prose text will be published by Editions Fissile in France in November 2006, entitled La Lumière de Salomon . Bryan was Playwright in Residence with Kerry County Council from 2004 to 2006 and has just been appointed Writer in Residence for Carlow County Council. He is the recipient of a playwright's bursary from the Peggy Ramsay Foundation, two travel awards from the Arts Council. Bryan is one of a number of Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Artists in Residence who hold a high profile in the County.
