Dún Laoghaire - Life in the Day is a rather special collaboration between composer and bass player Ronan Guilfoyle, and musician and broadcaster Ellen Cranitch. It’s a silent movie, filmed in Dun Laoghaire town and the surrounding area, and documenting the ordinary day-to day life of this unique town, with an especially composed score, performed live by Metier, the dlr Jazz Ensemble in Association.
Ronan Guilfoyle, Dún Laoghaire born and bred, has always had a deep affection for this stomping ground, its rich culture, history, topography, atmosphere, and not least, its people. His idea to celebrate this in a multi-faceted way, through the media of film, composition and improvisation, is a tribute to the richness of the area, to the diversity and vibrancy, which create the character, colour and individuality of this borough. Guilfoyle, one of Ireland's leading jazz musicians and composers says ‘I’ve lived in Dún Laoghaire for my entire life, and as a performer and composer I’ve always wanted to be involved in some musical project that represented my association with the area. Collaborating with Ellen Cranitch and having the opportunity to write a soundtrack to her wonderful film fulfilled that desire perfectly.’
His ensemble, Metier, the dlr Jazz Ensemble in Association, is regarded as one of the most cutting edge and innovative groups of musicians working in Ireland today. Comprising the finest of jazz improvisers, under the artistic direction of Ronan Guilfoyle, it is a tightly knit ensemble, virtuosic, dynamic and bristling with creative energy. Guilfoyle’s specially composed score for this film will allow each musician an amount of freedom to react to the images on screen, providing an immediate and compelling engagement for the audience.
Guilfoyle explains: ‘Adding in the element of improvisation while performing the music live completes the picture perfectly, involving as it does performance, improvisation, composition and the visual images of an area I know so well and have spent my life in.’
Ellen Cranitch’s images provide snapshots of the landscape, streetscape, maritime identity, and soul of the town. These, combined with the intensity of Guilfoyle’s composition, will make for a totally unique experience, not just confined to a local audience.
