Métier DLR Jazz Ensemble in Residence - Cabinteely House

MetierThe Country House Concert programme was jointly developed in 2005 by DLR County Council's Arts Office and Parks Department with Marlay and Cabinteely Country Houses providing beautiful environments in which to play and hear music of varying genres including classical, jazz and traditional. In addition the series has offered a new opportunity to visit the houses and enjoy the magnificently restored rooms where the concerts take place and to visit the surrounding gardens.

Métier is Ireland's first Jazz Ensemble in Residence, presented by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council with the support of the Arts Council.

Thursday 1st October @8pm

Premiere of 'First Thought, Best Thought', by Nils Wogram.

'First Thought, Best Thought'

When composing I was imagining Ronan Guilfoyle's concept of music and the sound of Métier - a set of music with various hints towards the great tradition in jazz combined with new concepts of form and improvisation. ' Nils Wogram

This new work was commissioned especially for Métier by dlr Arts with the assistance of the Arts Council.

Thursday 8th October @8pm

Jazz Reflections From Beyond The Pale

Guitarist Joe O'Callaghan presents a series of original pieces reflecting the jazz life outside of Dublin. These pieces reflect his thoughts and experiences on playing and developing a jazz language in an environment not wholly supportive of jazz. He has assembled a group of some of the best contemporary jazz musicians in Ireland to give life to these ideas.

Joe O'Callaghan -Guitar
Nick Roth - Saxes
Colm O'Hara - Trombone
Derek Whyte - Bass
Shane O'Donovan - Drums

Jazz Reflections From Beyond The Pale

'Fiasco! (Terms and Conditions still apply)'

In 2007 Métier's Artistic Director worked with the ensemble to present his extended work 'Terms and Conditions Apply' - a piece which used a unique mix of composition, improvisation and audio clips to comment on contemporary Ireland at the height of the Celtic Tiger. In this new piece Ronan again uses the power of improvised music to comment on the new situation the country finds itself in, in an original and powerful way.

Michael Buckley - Saxes
Joe O'Callaghan -Guitar
Justin Carroll - Piano
Ronan Guilfoyle - Bass
Sean Carpio - Drums

About Métier

Formed in 2007, under the artistic direction of Ronan Guilfoyle, one of Ireland's leading jazz musicians and composers, Métier is a group bristling with creative energy, both in improvisation and composition. Their repertoire is comprised exclusively of pieces composed by the various members of the ensemble and a performance by Métier represents the best that jazz in Ireland has to offer.

As dlr Jazz Ensemble in Residence, Métier's programme has had a number of strands including an innovative project featuring schools workshops and performances by international musicians Vincent Courtois and Lars Jansson, and an annual series of jazz concerts at Cabinteely House.

Over the last three years Métier's development as an ensemble has been encouraged through support for a national and international tour, with a tour dates including Royal Festival Hall's London Jazz Festival 2009, Dolan's Warehouse, Limerick, the Wexford Arts Centre and the 12 points Festival in Stavanger, Norway.

The residency has also supported the recording of Métier's first CD 'Cascade' in partnership with IMC; has enabled the ensemble to work collaboratively with artists such as filmmaker Ellen Cranitch (Dun Laoghaire - Day in the life) and has provided for the commissioning of new work especially for Métier by the jazz great, Nils Wogram.
