Food Waste
The Waste Management (Food Waste) Regulations 2009 have been introduced in order to increase levels of commercial food waste segregation and recovery, and thus reduce the amount of food waste sent for landfill disposal in Ireland.
These regulations affect a wide range of premises that prepare and/or serve food, from restaurants, pubs and hotels, to hospitals, schools and staff canteens. Producers of food waste are required to segregate their waste food at source, and ensure it is disposed of separately from any other types of waste.
Premises that produce less than 50 kgs of food waste per week may apply to their local authority for an exemption from the regulations, until the 1st July 2011.
Further information for businesses affected by the regulations is contained in this Food Waste Leaflet,
(pdf - 2.07MB) which has been produced by Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council.
