Smarter Travel, A Sustainable Transport Future, is the new Government’s transport policy document for Ireland (2009-2020). It sets out how the vision of a sustainable travel and transport system can be achieved.
Smarter travel is about the choices we make as a nation. Do we continue to walk less and use the private car, even when we have other cheaper and healthier options available to us, or can we choose to make real changes that reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, benefit our health and make our towns and cities more pleasant and effective places to move around in.
How can the individual, the business community and the government change the way we move around for the better good of everyone?
Increased focus on integrated, sustainable, efficient and comfortable public transportation systems is the key to turning around the levels of private car usage, which is unsustainable in its cost to the user, its capacity for movement and mobility and has detrimental effects to the environment.
