Our role in Quality Bus Corridor (QBC) provision is the planning of projects from inception to completion, in partnership with the QBN Project Office, the National Transport Authority (NTA) and the National Roads Authority (NRA). Consultation with An Garda Síochána, bus operators, the elected members, resident associations, businesses etc forms an integral part of the programme.
It is Council policy to implement the Quality Bus Network measures as set out in Transport 21 and in the DTO Strategy ‘Platform for Change’ and extend the bus network to other areas where appropriate subject to design, public consultation, approval, finance and resources.
You can view our list of new Quality Bus Network schemes to be implemented. These schemes will link to existing Quality Bus Corridors helping to make public transport provision more efficient.
The Council will also facilitate the provision of radial and orbital bus routes to integrate with existing bus and rail routes.
The provision of QBC's or Bus Priority Measures on a route can include many different measures, such as:
- The deployment of advanced traffic management techniques and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) applications, i.e. the provision of an urban traffic signaling systems such as SCATS (Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System), changes to the traffic-signaling configuration, public transport traffic signal priority, route optimisation through traffic signal co-ordination, junction redesign
- Reallocation of existing road space
- Widening of the roadway where appropriate
- Traffic Management measures to include turning movement bans etc.
To improve access to public transport, all new bus stops will be made wheelchair accessible with improved transport information displays and bus shelters provided at main transport nodes. Existing bus stops that currently do not meet these requirements will also be upgraded as part of an ongoing programme subject to finance and resources.
