The Transportation Department oversees around 700 kilometres of roads in the County, made up of 24 kms of Motorway, 125 kms of national and regional roads and just over 550 kms of local and estate roads. The principal activities of the Transportation Department are
- Design and construction of roads and motorways
- Improvement of existing roads and junctions
- Cycle networks
- Quality Bus Corridors and pedestrian facilities
- The upkeep of existing roads, footpaths, cycle tracks, public lighting, traffic signals, road signs and lining
- Monitoring of road openings and control of roadworks
- The implementation of traffic management measures and parking controls
- Road safety measures, promotion of road safety awareness and the operation of the school warden service.
