Registration of Quarries

Section 261 of the Planning and Development Act 2000 introduced a new system for the registration of Quarry Operations.  This section of the act came into effect on 28th April, 2004.  All quaries, except those the subject of a planning permission in the five years up to 28th April, 2004, had to be registered by 27th April, 2005.

Registration details in relation to those quarries were published in the National Press in accordance with the requirements of the regulations and submissions/observations were invited from the public with regard to their operation.  The Council took those submissions/observations received into consideration when undertaking its assessment of those quarries registered with this Authority.

In the case of a quarry, where it is a decision of the Council to require the quarry operator to submit a planning application, notification of such a decision must be sent to the quarry operator within 12 months of the date of the registration of the quarry.

Three quarry operations in this Council's administrative area applied for registration within the time limit.  There have been no subsequent additions.
