THE FUTURE IS OURS:

The County of

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown’s Integration Strategy
and Action Plan 2012-2015

Background:

Funding was obtained in 2011, by the dlr Council’s Social Inclusion Office, from the Office for the Promotion of Migrant Integration to develop an Integration Strategy and Action Plan for the County of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown.

A Steering Committee and Working Group, drawn from statutory, voluntary/ NGO and community-based groups and organisations, was established to take the work forward and Dr. Wendy Cox compiled and edited the report.

This new Strategy builds upon the achievements of the DLR Anti-Racism and Diversity Plan 2007 – 2010. There is an emphasis on ensuring that the policies and practice of all service-providing organisations are as inclusive as possible.

The Launch:

THE FUTURE IS OURS: The County of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown’s Integration Strategy and Action Plan 2012-2015 will be launched on Thursday, 19th January, at 11am in the Concourse, County Hall, Dún Laoghaire.

An exhibition will be set up in the Concourse from the 15th January, the exhibitors including: UNHCR, UNICEF, Margaret Browne (MFL photo) and Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders. Some of the organisations involved in the development of the strategy (28 in total) will also have stands outside the concourse.

Information about the Exhibitors

Margaret Brown’s exhibition -

We Are…
A key ingredient in the role of identity is the passport image. Photographic identities are a form of control, but they are also seen as a sign of belonging, acceptance and empowerment. For some, status can be fragile, with expiry dates constantly looming.

The use of simple words illustrates how language can constitute social reality and affect people’s lives.  This work plays on the use of the passport image to inter-pellate the visible and invisible identities of people who were born abroad, but are now living in Ireland.

Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF):

is a Nobel Prize-winning humanitarian aid agency.  Working in more than 60 countries, MSF teams provide medical care to people caught up in crises around the world, irrespective of race, religion or politics.

MSF opened its office in Ireland in 2006 and to date, Irish volunteers - including doctors, nurses, logisticians, pharmacists, water and sanitation engineers, finance specialists - have departed on more than 100 missions, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe.

The photos included in this exhibition illustrate our emergency crisis interventions in Haiti, Libya, Kenya and Japan last year, as well as our ongoing programmes in India and Central African Republic.

UNICEF Ireland:

UNICEF Ireland and Dublin City Council Integration Unit collaborated on a project called ‘Suitcase Stories’ for refugee children living in Ireland to tell their stories.

The concept for the Project was based on a similar exploration undertaken with a group of Refugee Children to South Africa.  In Ireland, the project expanded beyond only children from refugee backgrounds to incorporate children from a diversity of migrant contexts.

In total, 16 children and their families took part in the Project, representing migrant backgrounds from 6 countries – Slovakia; Cameroon; Eritrea; South Africa; Somalia and Nigeria.

UNHCR: 60 Years – Stories of Survival and Safe Haven has been developed by The UN High Commissioner for Refugees - Office in Ireland.

The exhibition includes portraits of 11 refugees who came to Ireland over the past 60 years since the signing of the UN Convention relating to refugees in 1951. Stories of Survival and Safe Haven brings to life Ireland’s little known but proud tradition in past decades, of providing a safe haven to those in need of international protection from persecution, terror, fear and conflict and of providing a place where the forcibly displaced can live freely in safety and dignity as they re-establish their place in the world. Faced with an uncertain future, the people depicted in this exhibition, and their families, summoned enormous courage to survive and to rebuild their shattered lives. They are survivors, each one with a remarkable story that tells of resilience in the face of great loss.

2010: the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion

The 2010 Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion, aims to make ‘a decisive impact on the eradication of poverty’. The European Union is one of the richest areas in the world, but still 17% of EU citizens have such limited resources that they cannot afford the basics.

Poverty is often associated with developing countries, where a lack of food and clean water can often be a daily challenge. Europe is also affected by poverty and social exclusion. It may not be as severe, but is nonetheless unacceptable. Poverty and exclusion of one individual amounts to the poverty of society as a whole. Europe can only be strong if each individual’s potential is realised.

There is no miracle solution to put an end to poverty and social exclusion. However, it is now time to renew our commitment to solidarity, social justice and greater inclusion.

Aperture Photograph Competition - 2008

The Social Inclusion Unit, with Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown’s Library Service, coordinated the Aperture Photograph Competition.  This competition asked people to take photographs in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown, of anything that represent social inclusion and diversity.

This could mean capturing people going about their daily business - images of the 'every day' which, demonstrates how social inclusion is alive and well within the local community. Or this could mean challenging the notion of inclusion, and using a photograph to question how inclusive a society we really are.

As 2008 was the EU Year for Intercultural Dialogue, a special prize was on offer for the photograph which best captures a good example of 'intercultural dialogue'.
