Q. What is the Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Joint Policing Committee?
A. DúnLaoghaire Rathdown Joint Policing Committee is a partnership between Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, An Garda Síochána and the Community. Its membership consists of senior Garda Officers, the County Manager and other Council officials as well as elected Councillors for the area. Representatives from Community and Voluntary groups are also included in the membership as well as a number of TD’s and Senators for the area.

Q. What is the role of the Community?
A. The Community, as in local residents, have an important part to play in the success of the DúnLaoghaire Rathdown Joint Policing Committee. The Gardaí in particular, need the assistance of local residents in keeping them up to date on any information that might be of assistance in solving a crime or regarding a threat to public safety. The Community Gardaí for your area can be contacted at your local Garda Station.

A. In order to make contact with the Community Gardaí for your area go to the map in the index and find the relevant contact numbers for your local Community Policing Unit.

Q. How can I voice my opinion on issues such as anti-social behaviour, graffiti, traffic matters etc?
A. The best way to do this is to come along to a Public Meeting of the Joint Policing Committee. These meetings will be advertised on the web-site and local newspapers from time to time for specific local areas around DúnLaoghaire Rathdown. You are free to attend any public meeting that is advertised for the general area in which you live.

Q. Who attends public meetings and where are they held?
A. Over the past year the Committee has held public meetings in local Community Halls in an effort to hear what local residents have to say about the policing of local areas. These meetings are attended by officials of DúnLaoghaire Rathdown County Council, Elected Representatives and members of An Garda Síochána including the Chief Superintendent and Superintendent for the particular area as well as Community Policing Sergeants and Community Gardaí.

Q. Who speaks at a public meeting?
A. Generally, the meeting is opened and chaired by the Chairperson of the JPC who is also an elected member of DúnLaoghaire Rathdown County Council. The Chairperson will then invite representatives of DúnLaoghaire Rathdown County Council and the Gardaí to address the meeting briefly before opening the meeting to the floor. Any member of the public present can address a statement or question to either the Council or the Gardaí in relation to any matter that is relevant to the meeting.
Public meetings of the DúnLaoghaire Rathdown JPC provide an opportunity for local residents to make observations and address questions to the members of the DúnLaoghaire-Rathdown JPC on matters relating to crime and anti-social behavior with a view to improving public safety within their local community. This provides a unique opportunity for members of the community to play a role in the partnership with the Gardaí and the Council in looking at crime and safety within local areas.

Q. What if I have an issue but don't want to speak at a public meeting?
A. If there is an issue that concerns you regarding crime and safety within your community, you should in the first instance contact your local Community Gardaí.
If you are at a public meeting but don’t want to raise your issue in a public forum,
an opportunity is provided at the end of each meeting for members of the public
to approach Council officials and local Community Gardaí on a one-to one basis.
All matters discussed are treated in the strictest confidence.

Q. How do I find out about Public Meetings in my area?
A. Forthcoming meetings will also be advertised in local papers about 21 days before a meeting is due to take place.
