Traveller Specific Accommodation

It is Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council’s policy to provide traveller specific accommodation for the county’s indigenous Travelling Community.  The Council regard a traveller household as “indigenous” where the household has been permanently resident in the county for at least three years immediately prior to the adoption of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council’s Traveller Accommodation Programme 2009-2013.  However, this does not preclude members of the Travelling Community not assessed for 2009-2013 Programme from applying for Traveller specific or Standard housing accommodation.

Grouped Housing Schemes

This type of accommodation comprises of a number of houses grouped together for the accommodation of Travelling people.  In Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown the largest Grouped Housing Scheme of eight houses is Nutgrove Crescent, Rathfarnham and the smallest scheme consists of two Grouped Houses in Old Conna, Bray.  In total there are currently 5 Grouped Housing Schemes in operation.  Caravans/trailers are not permitted on Grouped Housing schemes.

Halting Sites

Permanent Halting Sites consist of a halting site bay.  This is a small day house that has a kitchen/diner, bathroom and washing facilities/utility area.  Tenants of halting sites provide their own sleeping accommodation in the form of trailers or caravans based on their personal preference and family composition.  In this regard, their sleeping accommodation is provided through their own resources.  Halting sites in the county are built to the specifications of the Department of Environment, Heritage & Local Government Guidelines.  There are currently 5 Halting Sites and 2 emergency sites in operation in the county.
