DLR Arts Studio awarded to Joanne Boyle

Joanne Boyle, a recent graduate from IADT, is the inaugural recipient of the dlr Arts Studio Award 09/10. The award provides Joanne with a studio in The Grainstore, Cabinteely, for the period of 11 months, a bursary of €2000 to assist her practice development and a programme of mentorship which aims to support her engagement with young people through socially engaged/collaborative arts projects.

2009 is turning out to be a busy year for Joanne, as her solo exhibition 'Per Chance' opens in the Signal Arts Centre, Bray at 7pm on Friday, 13th Nov and runs until Sunday 22nd Nov.

Joanne's work incorporates a mixture of both sculpture and installation. This show presents a new body of work, a series of experiments exploring the use of the material bitumen. Due to the nature of this material, the sculptures in this show will continue to evolve over time.

In this work Joanne is interested in the immediacy of art making and the demystifying of the art making process. Some of the pieces in this show are documentations of studio-based tests, while others will happen on site within the gallery. A major concern of Joanne's relates to the process integral to a 'finished' piece and so the constant shifting of this work throughout the show is an essential element and questions this very notion.

DLR Arts Studio Award

The DLR Arts Studio Award is a pilot project for 2009 - 2010. With the support of IADT, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council's Arts Office will provide a graduate artist with a studio in The Grainstore, as well as the opportunity to engage in a Mentorship Programme, which will support the Artist's professional development. The focus of the Studio Award and Mentorship Programme is socially engaged/collaborative arts practice, with a specific concentration on Youth Arts.

We believe it's important for artists, with an interest in socially engaged collaborative processes, at the early stages of their practice, to be supported in developing the necessary skills is a supportive environment. The Studio Award and Mentorship Programme allows for this to happen and will have a huge long-term benefit to the practice of the artist in receipt of the award.

The recipient of the 2009-2010 will be announced shortly. For further details please contact:
